The Other End of the Pipe
Most of what we publish looks inside the auction lanes — which house lists what, how it grades, what the hammer prices are. This one follows the car out the gate. Once a lot clears at Glovis or SK, where does it physically go, and who is paying for it?
The headline of 2026 is not growth. Through the first half, Korea exported 323,170 used vehicles, down 26.1% from the 437,151 of H1 2025. But export dollars fell far less — down 16.1% — because the average car left the country at $10,100, and by June that figure had climbed to $11,100. Fewer cars, worth more each. The market is not shrinking so much as trading up.
Where they go explains why — because "where" has two answers that pull in opposite directions.
Volume and value are two different maps
Rank destinations by how many cars they take and the list is North Africa and Central Asia. Rank them by how much each car is worth and it is the Gulf, Central Asia's wealthier tier, and a handful of premium outliers. These are not the same buyers, and they do not want the same cars.
By volume — units per month, 2026 H1 average:
| # | Destination | Units / mo |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Libya | 9,525 |
| 2 | Kyrgyzstan | 8,031 |
| 3 | Albania | 3,725 |
| 4 | Tajikistan | 3,277 |
| 5 | Russia | 2,619 |
| 6 | Chile | 1,740 |
| 7 | UAE | 1,722 |
| 8 | Kazakhstan | 1,679 |
| 9 | Ghana | 1,613 |
| 10 | Saudi Arabia | 1,217 |
By price per car — USD, June 2026:
| Destination | Avg / car | Destination | Avg / car | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UAE | $24,900 | Russia | $16,600 | |
| Kazakhstan | $24,200 | Albania | $9,200 | |
| Saudi Arabia | $23,300 | Tajikistan | $7,100 | |
| Netherlands | $22,400 | Oman | $5,700 | |
| Kyrgyzstan | $22,300 | Cambodia | $5,100 | |
| Syria | $20,100 | Mongolia | $4,600 | |
| Jordan | $17,900 | Philippines | $2,100 |
The spread is the story. A car headed to Kazakhstan or the Gulf is worth roughly three times one headed to Albania or Tajikistan, and more than ten times one headed to the Philippines, which bars passenger-car imports outright — its average is all vans and trucks.1
One destination sits at the top of both maps: Kyrgyzstan. Second by volume (8,031 cars a month) and high on price at $22,300 each — its June exports alone were worth roughly $215M. If you source one market well, this is the one that rewards it on both axes.
Three buyer profiles, with the actual specs
Customs data broken out by engine class makes the profiles concrete rather than inferred.
High-value (Central Asia + Gulf). Kyrgyzstan's June mix ran heavily to gasoline 1,500–2,000cc (3,844 units) and 2,000–3,000cc (1,487), plus 2,000–2,500cc diesel (1,138) — mid-to-large sedans and SUVs — and a real hybrid slice (443 gasoline HEV, 93 diesel HEV). Kazakhstan is the same shape at lower volume but a higher $24,200 average. Saudi ($23,300) is recovering fast and skews the same way, with 82 HEV in the month.
Mid-market (Russia, Jordan). Russia at $16,600 concentrates in 1,500–2,000cc gasoline (2,183 units) with smaller 1,000–1,500cc volume — mid-size gasoline, nothing exotic. Jordan ($17,900) is notable for hybrids: 245 gasoline HEV in a single month, one of the clearest HEV signals on the map.
Volume (North Africa, Balkans). Libya took 13,142 cars in June alone, overwhelmingly 1,500–2,000cc gasoline (8,673) with a budget sub-1,000cc tail — the definition of a throughput market. Albania ($9,200) is the fastest-growing Europe-facing channel and unusually diesel-heavy (1,626 diesel 1,500–2,000cc against 1,004 gasoline).
What this means at the block
Map each tier back to the auction houses in our H1 2026 trading report — the house you source from should follow the market you sell to. And the used-export model leaders make the mapping obvious. These were the top used vehicles actually deregistered for export in 2025:
| # | Model | Units | # | Model | Units | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hyundai Porter II | 28,415 | 6 | Hyundai Avante MD | 13,305 | |
| 2 | Hyundai Grandeur HG | 16,228 | 7 | Hyundai Sonata YF | 13,110 | |
| 3 | Hyundai Sonata (LF) | 14,702 | 8 | Hyundai Santa Fe DM | 11,965 | |
| 4 | Hyundai Avante HD | 14,650 | 9 | Hyundai Grand Starex | 10,898 | |
| 5 | Kia Bongo III truck | 14,021 | 10 | Kia K5 | 9,669 |
Two things jump out: commercial vehicles lead — Porter II is the single most-exported used vehicle in the country, with Bongo III (#5) and Grand Starex (#9) close behind — and the rest is mid-size Hyundai/Kia sedans. (Note: the Trax and Kona that top new-car export charts are a different market; they barely feature in used exports.)
For volume markets (Libya, Albania — budget passenger cars), source at K Car. It is the budget end of the auction system: a $5,235 average against $11,477 at SK, carrying exactly these cars — Avante at $1,555, Morning at $1,488, Sonata at $2,029, all clearing above 60%. Glovis is the secondary well on sheer supply (Sonata $4,240, Avante $3,449).
For commercial demand, AJ is the specialist. Porter II and Bongo III are the #1 and #5 used exports nationally, and AJ is the one house where a commercial vehicle — Porter II at 62.1% clearance — sits in the top eight. If working trucks are your line, that is the well.
For high-value markets (Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Gulf — $22,000+ a car), source at SK and Lotte. SK carries the newest lease-return stock — Grandeur at $12,748, Ioniq 5 at $17,280, G80 at $18,531 — and clears it fast (58.8% house-wide). Lotte is the Genesis house: G80 at $18,598 is the most expensive high-volume model across the five houses.
One model bridges every tier: the Grandeur — #1 or #2 at all five houses, and #2 on the national used-export list. From $2,063 at K Car to $12,748 at SK, it is the single most flexible car to keep on the buy list.
Hybrids follow the money
Hybrid demand is not spread evenly — it concentrates in the high-value markets. In June the clearest HEV pull came from Kyrgyzstan (443 gasoline + 93 diesel HEV), Jordan (245), and Saudi (82) — the same buyers already paying $18,000–$24,000 a car. That lines up with the auction side: SK has taken the electrified crown from Lotte, with 25.2% of its sold volume now EV or hybrid and the Ioniq 5 (78.1% clearance) the single most liquid model we track. If hybrid export demand keeps climbing, SK is where the supply is.
The 2026 trajectory: down, then turning
The half-year was soft — through May, monthly volumes ran below 2025 — but the shape is turning up.
| 2026 | Units | Value | Avg / car |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan | 49,096 | $456.0 M | $9,300 |
| Feb | 46,193 | $466.5 M | $10,100 |
| Mar | 55,547 | $518.8 M | $9,300 |
| Apr | 60,651 | $591.7 M | $9,800 |
| May | 50,995 | $550.7 M | $10,800 |
| Jun | 60,688 | $675.0 M | $11,100 |
June jumped +9,693 units (+19%) over May, led by Libya, Kyrgyzstan and Saudi — together roughly +7,500 cars month-on-month. The Gulf is the soft spot: the UAE stayed weak on Hormuz-area shipping disruption, while Saudi recovered quickly. And the through-line is price — the average exported car rose from $9,300 in January to $11,100 in June, even as unit counts stayed below last year.
For sourcing, that turns destination into a live variable. In 2025 the question was "what sells." In 2026 it is "what sells to a market I can still ship to — at a price that's rising."
Takeaways
- Two maps, not one. Volume concentrates in Libya, Kyrgyzstan and the Balkans; value concentrates in the Gulf and Central Asia's wealthier tier. Pick the tier before you pick the car.
- Kyrgyzstan wins both — high volume and $22,300 a car. If you source one market well, source that one.
- Match the house to the market. K Car for budget/volume, AJ for commercial (Porter II, Bongo III), Glovis for mid-market depth, SK and Lotte for high-value and electrified.
- The Grandeur is the universal export car — top-two at every house and #2 on the national used-export list.
- The 2026 constraint is the route and the price, not raw demand. Volume is down 26% year-on-year, but per-car value is rising and June turned up sharply.

Export figures — destination volumes, per-car prices and 2026 monthly totals — are from Korea International Trade Association trade statistics (HS 8702 / 8703 / 8704, used vehicles) and the 2025 used-export model ranking from MOLIT / CL M&S / KAMA vehicle-registration data, as compiled by 신현도의 중고차 리서치 (2025 model breakdown). "By value" is shown as price per car rather than total value, because a complete country value ranking was not available and several high-volume African destinations report units without an average-price column. Auction prices are from our own sourcing operations for the 30 days ending 2026-07-21 — real hammer prices, not estimates; house averages are means, per-model prices medians. Shipping conditions move; verify current routes and numbers before committing capital.
USD figures use ₩1,478.63 = $1 (2026-07-21). Exchange rates move — check current rates before purchasing.
Footnotes
-
A handful of thin-volume premium channels sit far above this range and are excluded from the table because they move near-new foreign luxury reverse-exported in small numbers, not mainstream Korean stock: China ($111,200 per car), Uzbekistan ($41,700), Taiwan ($38,900) and Germany ($28,100). ↩
Frequently asked questions
Which countries buy the most Korean used cars in 2026?
By volume, the biggest destinations are in North Africa, Central Asia and the Balkans — led by Libya and Kyrgyzstan. Ranked by value per car, the Gulf (UAE, Saudi Arabia) and Central Asia's wealthier tier dominate. Kyrgyzstan is unusual in topping both lists.
How much did Korean used-car exports change in the first half of 2026?
Korea exported 323,170 used vehicles in H1 2026, down 26.1% from 437,151 in H1 2025. Export value fell far less — down 16.1% — because the average car left the country at about $10,100, rising to roughly $11,100 by June.
What are the most-exported Korean used car models?
In 2025 the Hyundai Porter II led with 28,415 units deregistered for export, followed by the Grandeur HG and Sonata (LF). Commercial vehicles lead overall — Porter II, Kia Bongo III and Hyundai Grand Starex all rank in the top ten.
Which Korean auction house should I source from for each export market?
Match the house to the market you sell to: K Car for budget and volume, AJ Autohub for commercial vehicles like the Porter II and Bongo III, Hyundai Glovis for mid-market depth, and SK and Lotte for high-value and electrified cars.
Which single export market is the strongest for Korean used cars?
Kyrgyzstan. It combines high volume with a high average value of about $22,300 per car, making it the standout destination if you source one market well.
